In , ODB rushed onstage unexpectedly during Shawn Colvin 's acceptance speech for " Song of the Year " at the Grammy Awards , and began complaining that he had recently purchased expensive clothes in anticipation of winning the " Best Rap Album " award that he lost to Sean Combs.
Before being escorted off-stage, he implored the audience, "I don't know how you all see it, but when it comes to the children, Wu-Tang is for the children.
We teach the children. Puffy is good, but Wu-Tang is the best. I want you all to know that this is ODB, and I love you all.
Later that night Combs' bodyguards would physically threaten ODB, but Dirty insisted to his friends and family in attendance that no violence broke out.
Following the award show, Howard Stern asked Dirty about the incident with Diddy's bodyguards on his radio show, but Dirty wouldn't play up the incident as he didn't want to shine a bad light on hip hop because of one minor altercation.
Who am I to argue? Puff knows how to sell some records. But that wasn't the direction to go in, and I know that now. There was some sort of physical altercation between Mase's and Ghostface's camps, and Mase left the incident with a broken jaw.
Kanye West is among several rappers who have made reference to the incident, rapping " Shyheim also referred to the incident in a freestyle, with the line "The Empire State, where Ghostface retired Mase".
In , Joe Budden posted a video blog voicing his opinion on a "Best rapper" readers' poll posted in Vibe magazine.
Throughout the video, Budden gave examples of rappers who were ranked too high, and claimed to be better than half of the rappers on the list.
At the end of the video, he went on to say that he'd beat Method Man in a battle if they were face to face. Shortly after this, Budden called into Ed Lover's Power Several weeks later, Joe Budden did a freestyle track titled "D.
Freestyle", which many speculated of containing veiled shots towards Method Man and several members of Wu-Tang. Method Man was overseas while all of this occurred, but eventually spoke out about it on several radio interviews.
While Raekwon was on the Rock the Bells tour with Joe Budden and his group Slaughterhouse, the two got together to settle any bad blood. This calmed things down for a short while, until Wu-Tang member Inspectah Deck released a Joe Budden diss track entitled "House Nigga", which was a response to Budden's remarks.
A few days after releasing this track, on July 9, , Deck went on stage at the Columbia, MD show of Rock the Bells, during Raekwon's set, and told the audience the reason for the diss track was because "the nigga tried to diss my brother, he tried to shit on my nigga like my nigga ain't a made man Joe Budden did not retaliate with a diss track, but however, posted a five-minute video blog in which he said that he wanted to slap Deck and called Deck a coward.
Shortly after this occurred, Joe Budden posted yet another online video blog of him with an ice pack over his eye, with many speculating Raekwon as the one who did the assault.
It was later revealed that the punch was thrown by a member of Raekwon's entourage named Hanz. I look at him like, not the school yard bully, but the motherfucker that's always picking on a motherfucker that don't fuck with nobody.
To say something about a nigga like Meth is crazy, Meth don't fuck with nobody. I'm not gonna sit here and say Rae made me do it, that was a spontaneous decision on my own.
I'm glad I did it, 'cause he got a big mouth It wasn't actually planned, he could have actually changed that whole situation as it unfolded, as it went on".
Although Joe Budden and Raekwon reportedly were sat down and forced to settle things on the final day of the tour, Budden released a video on his website challenging Raekwon to a one-on-one fight, and called on all his fans to help persuade Raekwon to accept, despite the fact that it wasn't Raekwon who threw the punch.
Raekwon however did not accept, and explained that he is a grown man with a family, and that fighting would be childish. My thing is this, I'm a business man, I'm here to make money, take care of my family and keep as many people safe and sound as possible.
We not gonna take it there 'cause that's little shit, we are grown men. I will never jump out the window to sacrifice the situation with my family for something that ain't worth it".

We want him to be involved [with the album as an MC], but the concept was for him not to be involved production-wise".
I want some feedback from the fans to see how they would take that. RZA produced tracks, some other outside producers, of course, and we gonna have Wu-Tang members on the album, but it'll be a Rae, Ghost and Meth album.

West's own take on RZA's style briefly flooded the rap market with what was dubbed "chipmunk soul", the pitch bending of a vocal sample to where it sounded as though the singer had inhaled helium.
Several producers at the time copied the style, creating other offshoots. West has admitted that his style was distinctly influenced by RZA's production, and RZA has acknowledged his influence in an issue of Scratch magazine , saying he wished he had produced "Jesus Walks" and "Breathe", two hits produced by Kanye West and Just Blaze, respectively.
Kanye West commented:. Me and my friends talk about this all the time We think Wu-Tang had one of the biggest impacts as far as a movement.
From slang to style of dress, skits, the samples. Similar to the [production] style I use, RZA has been doing that. Raekwon 's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx The landmark album touted a lifestyle patterned on drug dealing, regrets of living in harsh conditions, and partying including popularizing the Cristal brand of champagne which Nas , Mobb Deep , Notorious B.

Wu Tang Saga , starring Cappadonna and featuring footage of the Clan dating back to the early nineties through their most recent tours was released on February 25, Ghostface had a non-publicized feud with 50 Cent in the late s and early s.
On 50 Cent's track " How to Rob " insults were aimed at many high-profile rappers, including Wu-Tang. In the early s the argument made it on to wax with skits titled "Clyde Smith" on Supreme Clientele featuring a low-pitched recording of what most fans believe to be Raekwon's voice derisively making fun of 50 Cent's behavior and his methods of attracting attention to himself.
The skit also joked at other unnamed "gangster rappers" in New York. That track was later reworked into the titled Too Hot with 50 rapping over a sample of Ghostface on Raekwon's album.
G-Unit member Tony Yayo has alleged that Ghostface had a ghostwriter for his critically acclaimed album Supreme Clientele.
In an interview with Spin magazine, Yayo claimed that Far Rockaway native Lord Superb, who guested on the album, wrote a majority, if not all, of the lyrics.
I don't even wanna get into shit like that, because it just makes me upset that muthafuckas be running they mouth all kinda ways.
But at the end of the day, I think Ghost gonna have to really say what he gotta say. When we write, we all do that. You got niggas around you that write.
Even if he did write a verse, he could never make an album of mine. I made Supreme Clientele what it is. During his career, The Notorious B. According to Method Man, though even at this point friction was present between Biggie and the Clan, the two rappers got along:.
They thought he was a biter. The rest of my niggas had love for Big. It was just Rae and Ghost And we would just roll right by [B. But Lil' Cease can vouch for this, and my niggas can vouch for this—-I always stopped to give word with Big.
No matter what. There was a show Like, "Yo, I wanna do something with you on my album. In , on the album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx This generated longstanding controversy over their differences with B.
And when Ghost is saying whatever he was saying, we kinda knew who he was talking about, but it wasn't like we was trying to start a beef. It's just sometimes, when you get in the booth and you start saying what you wanna say, it just happened.
God bless the dead, I love B. He's a fucking icon. Even when I seen him out in Cali, I wanted to tell son, yo, let's go ahead and make this record together because I matured through the years, and at the same time, I recognized good music.
We shook hands on some peace shit, but that was all, cause they was on their way to leaving out. A day or two later, niggas [killed him].
In RZA's view, had the artists and their entourages met up that night, things could have gotten violent, but nothing of the sort ever occurred.
It is worth mentioning that on B. RZA went on to comment about the collaboration, saying "Biggie was always pretty cool with me. He liked the Wu-Tang sound.
He requested me to be on the album. On the same album, B. In , Ghostface and Raekwon did a posthumous collaboration with B.
In , Raekwon did a cover of Jadakiss ' hit "Letter to B.
Recording sessions took place during early-to-mid at Firehouse Studio in New York City , and the album was produced by the group's de facto leader RZA.
Its title originates from the martial arts films Enter the Dragon and The 36th Chamber of Shaolin The gritty, distinctive sound of Enter the Wu-Tang 36 Chambers created a blueprint for hardcore hip hop during the s, and helped return New York City hip hop to national prominence.
Its sound also became greatly influential in modern hip hop production, while the group members' explicit, humorous, and free-associative lyrics have served as a template for many subsequent hip hop records.
Serving as a landmark release in the era of hip hop known as the East Coast Renaissance , its influence helped lead the way for several other East Coast rappers, including Nas , The Notorious B.
Despite its raw, underground sound, the album had surprising chart success, peaking at number 41 on the US Billboard chart, selling 30, copies in its first week on sale.
By it was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America , and in October it was certified triple platinum.
The group never signed to a major label, but caught the attention of the New York City rap scene and was recognized by rapper Biz Markie.
Both were soon dropped by their labels. When they dropped me, I was thinking, 'Damn, they chose a bunch of whiteboy shit over me. The duo decided to create a hip hop group whose ethos would be a blend of " Eastern philosophy picked up from kung fu movies , watered-down Nation of Islam preaching picked up on the New York streets, and comic books.
This competition led to the track "Meth Vs. He complemented the rappers' performances with "lean, menacing beats that evoked their gritty, urban surroundings more effectively than their words," according to Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic.
According to music journalist Ben Yew, the minimalist means of production plays directly into the music's "street" aesthetic.
Enter the Wu-Tang ushered in a new standard for hip hop at a time when hip hop music was dominated by the jazz-influenced styles of A Tribe Called Quest , the Afrocentric viewpoints of Public Enemy , and the rising popularity of West Coast gangsta rap.
The album's explicit, humorous and free-associative lyrics have been credited for serving as a template for many subsequent hip hop records. Every track on Enter the Wu-Tang is packed with fresh, inventive rhymes, which are filled with martial arts metaphors, pop culture references everything from Voltron to Lucky Charms cereal commercials to Barbra Streisand's "The Way We Were" , bizarre threats of violence, and a truly twisted sense of humor.
With the exception of "Method Man" and GZA's "Clan in da Front", every song features multiple rappers contributing verses of varying lengths.
There is some debate about whether the lyrics on 36 Chambers are properly classified as gangsta rap or something else entirely. The lyrics reach back to New York's own Rakim : dense battle rhymes potent with metaphors.
Each Wu MC links his rhymes to crime and violence, allowing his preoccupations to surface subtly and indirectly, rather than spouting off overt gangsta-isms designed to shock The hood imagery of the lyrics is utterly pervasive and uncompromising, immersing the listener in a foreign land smack in the middle of New York.
There is no celebration here, and little hope. Masta Killa only appears on one track, contributing the last verse of "Da Mystery of Chessboxin,'" but all the other rappers appear on at least two songs.
Method Man and Raekwon are the most prolific of the group, featured on eight tracks. Though the performers have widely differing techniques, the chemistry between them is a key ingredient of the album's success.
Part of the album's title originates from the Five Percent philosophy, known to adherents as the Supreme Mathematics, which attaches the number 9 with the meaning "to bring into existence".
In reference to the kung fu film The 36th Chamber of Shaolin that the group enjoyed watching, the Clan considered themselves as lyrical masters of the 36 chambers, and arrived onto the rap scene while appearing to be ahead, and more advanced over others, with "knowledge of 36 chambers of hip hop music when everyone else in hip hop was striving to attain the knowledge of 35 lessons".
However, this is just a theory; the true significance of the title is not definitively known. The track was also edited to scratch out all profanity, save for repeated use of the word " nigga".
An uncensored version known as the "Bloody Version" was released on the compilation album, Legend of the Wu-Tang Clan.
The single failed to chart on the Billboard Hot but reached number 24 on the Hot Rap Tracks chart in Enter the Wu-Tang 36 Chambers was received positively by contemporary critics.
In an article for The Source , The Ghetto Communicator wrote "This record is harsh, but so is the world that we live in. For B-boys n'girls who come from the core of the hard, this is the hip-hop album you've been waiting for".
In refusing to commodify themselves, they leave blank the ultimate canvas—the self. Over time, Enter the Wu-Tang became one of the most highly regarded albums in hip hop.
Publications based outside of the United States have acclaimed 36 Chambers as well; Australia's Juice magazine placed it at number 40 on its list of " Greatest Albums of the '90s", and Les Inrockuptibles ranked it number 59 on a list of "The Best Albums —".
This is the sound of accidental fame. Something as unique and unusual as this record isn't supposed to find itself at the height of commercial viability; it's supposed to smolder underground, hidden from the view of mainstream America, who surely would not be ready for such a challenge.
But America was ready, in part because this one challenged convention, not listeners. Sure, its sloppy drum programming, bizarre song structures, and unpolished sound quality disturbed commercial rap purists, but the talent was so inherent and obvious, and the charisma so undeniable, that it propelled the Wu-Tang Clan to the height of the rap game, and today stands not just as the hip-hop classic that introduced the concept of obscure thematic characters each member's name references old kung-fu movies , but also bridged the gap between traditional old-school sensibilities and the technical lyricism of today.
In a retrospective review, Robert Christgau found the Wu-Tang Clan "grander" and "goofier" than their West Coast contemporaries and concluded, "Expect the masterwork this album's reputation suggests and you'll probably be disappointed—it will speak directly only to indigenous hip hoppers.
Expect a glorious human mess, as opposed to the ominous platinum product of their opposite numbers, and you'll realize the dope game isn't everyone's dead-end street".
Adam Heimlich of the New York Press considers the album a touchstone of hardcore hip hop , a gritty, stripped-down, dark and violent subgenre of hip hop and the signature sound of New York City 's rap scene during the mids.
He writes that "the Wu-Tang Clan Mobb Deep , and Jay-Z. At the time of the album's release, mainstream hip hop was dominated by the West Coast.
Dre 's funk-filled, West Coast gangster rap dominated the business. Though this initial dominance was difficult to overcome, Wu-Tang still managed to carve out a piece of rap history.
RZA's production on Enter the Wu-Tang had a profound and significant influence on subsequent hip hop producers. This expansion across the music industry was an element of RZA's stated plan for industry-wide domination, wherein "All Wu releases are deemed to be 50 percent partnerships with Wu-Tang Productions and each Wu member with solo deal must contribute 20 percent of their earnings back to Wu-Tang Productions, a fund for all Wu members".
On Enter the Wu-Tang ' s effect on the group and the music industry, the Milwaukee Journal ' s Aaron Justin-Szopinski wrote "The Wu showed us that a hip-hop group can control its own destiny in the tangled web of the industry.
And that control, that outlook for the future, is what makes it the best. In , the group reunited, at the behest of RZA, for an album and tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of the album ' s release.
